Our homes are getting smarter, increasingly filled with internet-connected devices. In addition to our computers and smartphones, today’s home network supports a growing list of items that use sensors, software, and access to the internet to collect and exchange data. The Internet of Things (IoT) is changing the way we work, play, live, learn, and communicate. Whether it’s your smart TV, smart speaker, or baby monitor, it’s hard to think of buying a new device or appliance that does not feature some sort of connectivity. While IoT devices are designed to make our lives easier, they also expose us to cyber-attacks that may involve limited or complete takeover of our devices and theft of personal data.

IoT Threat Data

We recently joined forces with Bitdefender, the global leader in cybersecurity software, to further investigate the security risks facing today’s smart homes and what we can expect in the future. We reviewed threat data from the 2.6 million homes around the world protected by NETGEAR Armor™ Powered by Bitdefender® and 3.6 billion security events identified and isolated by the service. We were able to identify the most vulnerable IoT devices in the home and what kind of attacks target them. The research also includes some key predictions for the coming years and how families can stay safe. You can review all of our findings and recommendations in the 2023 IoT Security Landscape Report.

Managing home IoT Security

Managing the security of connected devices can be a challenge for anyone, especially since many IoT gadgets do not come with security software nor are they often updated with new features that provide any inherent protection. Luckily, families can protect their home networks and information with solutions like NETGEAR Armor which provides an automatic shield of security for your WiFi and connected devices (PC, phone, camera, TV, Echo, etc.). With protection built into the router, Armor acts like an effective front door lock to your home network, eliminating the cost and effort associated with multiple security subscriptions or software. Armor is a one-stop solution for keeping your family safe.

The Solution for IoT Protection: NETGEAR Armor

Many of our current devices, including Nighthawk RS700S and our latest Orbi routers and mesh systems come with a free one-year subscription to Armor which combines our 25+ year-long pursuit to deliver the fastest, most robust WiFi and Bitdefender’s award-winning technology to secure all connected devices in every home. Current NETGEAR customers can subscribe to Armor directly from the Orbi or Nighthawk app. Learn more about cybersecurity.

NETGEAR Armor and the US Cyber Trust Mark

In our 2023 joint report with Bitdefender, we shared that home networks see an average of 8 attacks every 24 hours – with smart TVs being the most vulnerable followed by:
● smart plugs
● routers
● DVRs
● wifi extenders
● IP cameras
● set-top boxes
● media players
● Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices
● home automation systems

Recognizing the implications of these security risks in IOT devices, the FCC launched a cybersecurity certification and labeling program officially known as the US Cyber Trust Mark. It aims to help consumers make smart buying decisions by letting them know which devices comply with national cybersecurity standards set by the US Department of Commerce.

Before these security standards were even brought to the national limelight, NETGEAR was already working towards a safer and more secure way of using interconnected devices. We specifically offer NETGEAR Armor™ for this very purpose – to defend you from IOT security threats.

In 2022 alone, Armor™ has blocked more than 100,000 attacks on the most vulnerable home devices. Most of these attacks rely on common vulnerabilities and exposures (CVEs). Although these vulnerabilities are already known to IoT vendors, they may take some time for firmware vendors to identify and fix – especially for devices that are already being used by customers. This gives cybercriminals plenty of time to carry out more attacks and potentially steal more sensitive data.

NETGEAR Armor™ protects you from these attacks by securing providing automatic blanket protection for all connected devices. Even if your device isn’t covered by the US cybersecurity certification program, NETGEAR Armor can automatically detect security threats and prevent them from affecting devices on your home network. Your Armor subscription comes with an anti-theft feature that lets you remotely track your device location and wipe out sensitive information in case it’s lost or stolen. It also provides a VPN for your mobile devices, protecting them even when they’re not connected to your home network. NETGEAR Armor is a one-stop solution for whole-home protection.

At NETGEAR, we make it our mission to ensure that you get the highest level of IOT security possible. Rest assured that we will continue updating and improving our products to provide your home with IOT security solutions that keep your devices safe and your mind at ease.
